Among Christian traditions, none has had as long-standing a relationship with Islam as have the Eastern Churches. Eastern Christians and Muslims have lived, worked and worshipped in close proximity to one another since the emergence of Islam in the 7th Century. This four week study program explores some aspects of this long relationship and the mutual impact of these two traditions. The course will not provide a comprehensive survey; rather, specific topics reflect the interests and expertise of visiting instructors.  Our Spring 2024 program will begin with a general orientation to the history, theological distinctives and variations of Eastern Christianity.  During our second and third weeks we will focus especially on Syriac Christian interactions with Islam. For our fourth and final session we will welcome a representative of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to explore contemporary issues facing Orthodox Christian communities in Islamic contexts.

This is a 4-week course. Course materials will be available April 10. Zoom sessions will be on Wednesdays, April 17, April 24, May 1, and May 8 beginning at 5pm Istanbul time.
