The doctrine of the atonement is at the heart of Christian teaching, and was a key aspect of Jewish theology, practice, cult, and worldview. As a book that claims to inherit and complete the revelation given to both Jews and Christians, the Qur’an likewise employs the biblical word for atonement (kaffara) though the concept appears to have undergone change in the process. In order to better understand one another as we interact, this course will survey the concepts of atonement within the book of Leviticus, the book of Hebrews, and the Qur’an in order to explore how the three faiths each developed their own understanding of this most important doctrine.
